Cricket's richest XI ever is
playing a Test. As amusing as it is to say it in the post-IPL landscape: That's
what they do for majority of the year - play Tests. That sounds like a
significant event. It is also a series which bankrolls the cricketing system of
a country. Imagine yourself as a spectator in the ground at
Eden Park today.
Would you be able to sense any of that?
It has the feel of a small time club
organizing a community activity to collect money for some good cause through
gate receipts, while at the same time commanding the market price of a mass
sport through broadcasting rights and assorted sponsorship.
Is Test Cricket popular? I can't see it
on the stands. Does it make money? Try abandoning the tour.
Perversely, I like this new dichotomy of
Test Cricket.
